White House targets Iran with its new strategy to counter terrorism

National security adviser John Bolton said, Iran has been ‘the world’s central banker of international terrorism since 1979’ .

The White House has hammered Iran in a new counter-terrorism strategy which was released on Thursday.

John Bolton, the National security adviser outlined the new strategy by saying it focuses on targeting “all” the terrorist groups — a category that the document defines as including “radical Islamic terrorist groups.”

Bolton said in a conference call with reporters that such groups represent the pre-eminent transnational terrorist threat to the United States and to the United States’ interests abroad.

The relationship between U.S. and Iran has become strained after U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and reimposed sanctions to the country.

Bolton, referred to the new strategy as the first robust and fully articulated strategy on counterterrorism since the year 2011. He said that Iran has been the world’s central banker of international terrorism since 1979.

The document is just one of the string of strident statements the Trump team has made about Iran after pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal. In this deal Tehran had scaled back its nuclear program in exchange for relief on sanctions.

The rhetoric has increased in the recent weeks. The State Department has warned Iran many times over what they say is Tehran-backed violence targeting American diplomats in Iraq.

The Trump administration last week decided to pull diplomats from an American facility in Iraq over the issue.

In another instance, the Trump administration ripped up a decades-old friendship treaty with Iran earlier this week in response to a United Nations ruling that new American sanctions on Tehran violated the pact.

The new counterterrorism strategy does not focus only on Iran but it also details the administration’s approach on how to deal with the Islamic State.

In a statement on the strategy, President Donald Trump said that under his leadership the ISIS has been “decimated” in Syria and Iraq.

Bolton said that this is not the Obama administration would be his message to Iran and anybody else.
