After Shrek Forever After, the next movie from the series is Shrek 5. The series has been a great success since the very beginning. We have heard that Shrek 5 will be the last one from the series and that it will not be a sequel, but a reboot.

We learned that Shrek 5 will come with a new story and that it will not be the continuation of the last Shrek movie released. The movie will come with new themes and a plot that’s different than those in the series. This means that the franchise will be reinvented, and the movie will come with something new this time.
But the characters will be the same as in the rest of the movies. The only thing different will be the plot, which will feature the modern way of life.
The 2019 release of the movie
Back in 2016, DreamWorks Animation was purchased by NBCUniversal. That’s when Shrek 5 was announced. The Chairman of NBCUniversal, Steve Burke, stated that he has a plan to bring the series back. Then, a few months after, we found out that the new movie will be released in 2019.
So is it canceled or delayed?
A 2019 release did not happen, as we have all seen. The new writer, Michael McCullers, was done with the script, but the production was never commenced. Will NBCUniversal withdrew with the plan? Fans believed that they canceled the whole thing since Dreamworks gave no updates of the movie with regards to its cancellation or delay.

However, on IMDb Shrek 5 is noted to be released in 2022.
