Minecraft Won the First Place on the Best Games of YouTube in 2019 Thanks to PewDiePie

Minecraft is still one of the most popular games out there. It’s not like there was ever a time in which it was not accessible. But thanks to some YouTubers, Fortnite is now left in the dust.

Minecraft Is Popular on Streaming Platforms

As part of its annual Rewind event, YouTube has put a list of the five most popular video games on its platform. Guess who won first place? You’re right, Minecraft! With 100.2 billion views until October. The second place was won by Fortnite, with 60.9 billion, then Grand Theft Auto, with 36.9 billion, then Garena Free Fire with 29.9 billion, and the last place was taken by Roblox with 29.6 billion.

Earlier this year, Minecraft just appeared on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, and Fortnite didn’t, mostly because of its unpopular new features. It was logical that Minecraft appeared on platforms, since there’s not a trace of violence there, and it’s advertiser-friendly, which means that it is less likely to be deleted by YouTube’s ad removal systems. The audience? People full of nostalgia. The players? YouTubers who grew up playing Minecraft.

YouTube stated that the surge was caused by a single YouTuber, who was left out from the 2018’s Rewind event, probably because he was not “friendly enough”: PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg).

YouTube’s most subscribed creator, PewDiePie, decided to start playing the game again, back in June. The month after the YouTuber posted one of his videos: ‘Minecraft Part 1’, which also happens to be the first Minecraft video in years, there were many uploads of videos that were related to the game. and this is the story of how Minecraft won first place in the top of the most-viewed games of the year list.”
