How to Get Google’s New Chat Service for Android

Everybody likes to chat, whether it shall be with friends, co-workers, loved ones, hated ones, spouse, mistress, and so on. Communication is a very important part of human nature, and messaging services know that pretty well. With apps like Facebook’s Messenger, WhatsApp or Viber gaining great success, Google couldn’t afford to fall short. Therefore, the giant from Mountain View developed its own messaging service for Android users and it simply called it “Chat”.

Google’s chat service has already been released, but for the moment it’s available only for those living in the United States.

The target is to replace the standard SMS

Let’s be honest: SMS’s are boring and antiquated, and very few people are still using them in a world where sharing huge files via other apps is something usual. Sanaz Ahari, Google’s product management director, acknowledges that himself by saying:

Texting is largely based on the SMS standard which lacks a lot of modern features, like sharing high quality photos and media or being able to message over Wi-Fi,

We just felt like we had to address that user need.

Therefore, Google’s brand new chat service comes not only as an alternative for other notorious and similar apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, but it’s aimed at making users forget once and for all the SMS’s.

What can Chat actually do

Google’s Chat is a much more modern way of communicating: as you might have already guessed, it can send videos and high resolution photos using the Wi-Fi connection, and it even informs the user when the person he is texting starts to write a reply.

This is clearly not the first time when Google tries to provide a modern chat service for its users. Duo and Hangouts can also be good options, but they didn’t have quite the success expected.
