How to Back Up Your WhatsApp Chats on Google Drive

It is always good to back up your work, so you won’t lose it is the case sometimes goes wrong, but the same goes for personal things. WhatsApp has a backup feature that can save you private life in case you need to switch to another device or, worse, lost your smartphone.
You can back up all WhatsApp chats and media with the help of Google Drive.

That means that this feature is available on both Android and iOS smartphones. However, your backed-up messages and media from the app are not protected by the system of communication that you would normally have on WhatsApp.

How to back up WhatsApp chats on Google Drive

  • Open the WhatsApp app on your device.
  • Go to the ‘settings’ option.
  • Tap on the ‘chats’ option.
  • Next, tap on the ‘Chat backup’ option.
  • You have the option to backup WhatsApp media and messages automatically. For that, go to the ‘back up to Google Drive’ option under ‘Google Drive settings’.
  • Pick the frequency you would like, from the list of available options, at which you want WhatsApp media and messages to be backed up regularly.
  • Next, tap the ‘Google account’ option and choose the backup Google account.
  • Tap on the ‘Back up over’ option to choose your back up mode: via Wi-Fi or via either Wi-Fi or cellular.
  • You can also choose if you want to back up the WhatsApp videos or not. If you choose yes, then the total size of the backup will be bigger.
    • Now, tap on the ‘Back up’ option to start the backup process.

How to restore a backup from Google Drive

  • Install WhatsApp on your new device.
  • Open the app on your new device.
  • Next, read and agree to the privacy policy and terms of service of WhatsApp.
  • Follow through with the phone number verification.
  • After verification is complete, tap on the ‘next’ option.
  • WhatsApp will ask you for access to your contacts, photos, media, and files on the device. Tap the ‘continue’ option on this dialog box.
  • Next, Tap the ‘restore’ option. Wait for the restoring process to finish.
  • Name your new WhatsApp account and then tap the ‘next’ option.
  • Now, all your WhatsApp chats and media should be again part of your smartphone.
