Fix for VLC crash on Windows 10

VLC is a hugely popular app across both PCs and mobiles, and we shouldn’t be surprised about it. It supports all the video formats, and it has almost only positive reviews. But unfortunately, some users reported recently that the app has been crashing on their Windows 10 devices. If you are among them, you’ll be able to solve the problem if you follow this article.

There are two major and simple ways to fix the crash of VLC for the latest Windows.

1. Reset settings

Hopefully, you are not so shy that you cannot quickly locate the settings for VLC. Follow these instructions:

  • Open VLC Media Player > Press Ctrl P. This will open VLC Preferences.
  • Click on Reset Preferences > Click OK.
  • Restart VLC afterward.

If the problem still didn’t go away, try plan B:

2. Reinstall the app

I know, it sounds ridiculous, but it’s the oldest trick in the book that can get things running for a lot of apps. It also applies to VLC.

For Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start > Control Panel > Program > Programs and Features
  • On the list of programs, locate VLC Media Player, click on the program and then click on “Uninstall/Change”.
  • Follow the prompts to complete uninstall process.

For Windows 8:

  • Click on Start menu, select “Programs and Features”
  • Locate and Click on VLC Media Player.
  • Now, select “Uninstall”

For Windows 10:

  • Click the Start button, and then select “Settings”
  • Click on “System”
  • Now, Select “Apps & Features” in the left-hand sidebar
  • Scroll down to locate VLC Media Player
  • Click “Uninstall” and then confirm the uninstall in the pop-up window by clicking “Uninstall”

The next step is obvious: just go to the official website of VLC and reinstall the app on your device. If none of the solutions managed to fix the crash on your Windows 10, you might consider switching to Mac OS or another media player app.
