After a history of five years, it seems like the end of the road for Facebook Lite on some phones. The app is pretty popular among users of the most notorious social network in the world, as it was built for those who don’t own powerful phones and who don’t benefit from stable and fast internet connections.
Facebook has billions of users, and there’s no wonder why its software engineers are aiming to maintain such number or even increase it. Creating an app for those who can’t possibly access the internet in the same rhythm as the others seems mandatory.
Facebook Lite is disabled for some users
A message that users from Brazil see when they try to launch the app is informing them that Facebook Lite has been disabled. A Facebook spokesperson also reveals to the public:
Due to the limited adoption and improvements we are making to improve the experience for people in our apps, we will no longer support Facebook Lite for iOS.
While we don’t know for the moment if the unavailability of Facebook Lite will increase or not, it’s still an important app for plenty of people. The description from Google Play Store confirms it:
Keeping up with friends is faster and easier than ever with the Facebook Lite app! Use Facebook Lite as a friends app to connect and keep up with your social network. The Facebook Lite app is small, allowing you to save space on your phone and use Facebook in 2G conditions. Many of the classic features of Facebook are available on the app, such as sharing to a Timeline, liking photos, searching for people, and editing your profile and groups.
Hopefully, SpaceX’s Starlink satellites will solve in the upcoming years once and for all the unavailability of decent internet connectivity for specific regions of the world. The space agency aims to build a 12,000-satellite mega constellation above the Earth’s atmosphere. In such a scenario, there would be no need for a Lite version of the Facebook app.
