The first piece of news came from publisher Devolver Digital, which encouraged people to cancel their E3 2020 plans, flights, and accommodation. Ars Technica has also published a report stating that cancellation is inevitable. Multiple reliable sources that know more about this matter have talked to GameSpot, saying that this will be, indeed, the case. This is the first time the annual event skipped a year, and they are right to do it.
E3 2020 has been canceled, and we won’t be seeing it in June anymore, as it was initially planned. The ESA, that’s the one organizing the annual event, has shared the news, together with several other reports. Xbox and Ubisoft are already making plans in order to hold digital events.
E3 2020 Has Been Canceled
ESA stated: “After careful consultation with our member companies regarding the health and safety of everyone in our industry–our fans, our employees, our exhibitors, and our longtime E3 partners–we have made the difficult decision to cancel E3 2020, scheduled for June 9-11 in Los Angeles.”
They also stated that, following the situation with COVID-19, they believed this was the best way to continue during such a global situation. They are disappointed that they cannot hold the event anymore, but it is the right decision in these circumstances.
ESA stated they would be in touch with the exhibitors and attendees for the full refunds. They are also exploring options with our members to coordinate an online experience to showcase industry announcements and news in June 2020.”
That is all we know so far about this decision. Xbox, Ubisoft, and Limited Run Games have in their plans to hold their own digital events. Limited Run will host a press conference on the 8th of June, as they initially scheduled it, and Nintendo also has in its talks a digital event.
