Best Alternatives to Skype

Skype is Microsoft’s video call service, and despite its undeniable popularity, a lot of people don’t like it. It changes its interface pretty often, it has plenty of bugs, and the call quality is not always right. On some computers, Skype was reported to have one of the nastiest bugs possible: although users were setting it from “system configuration” to not open at startup, the program somehow managed to defy the setting.

But it’s 2019 and there’s plenty of apps to choose from if we want an efficient video call service. So feel free to test each of them and figure out which one suits you best:

Jami

Developed by Canadian company Savoir-faire Linux, Jami is available for the following operating systems: Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, and FreeBSD.

It features HD video calling, instant messages, file sharing, and, most of all: the prioritizing of the privacy of users.

Unlike other Skype alternatives, calls using Jami are direct between users, which means that no-one else can see or hear what you’re talking with a friend or foe.

WhatsApp

Operating system: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Chrome OS.

Features: Video calling, group chat, web and desktop clients, voice calls

Everybody knows the service, and most people are using it. Besides text messaging, voice and video calls, it also offers end-to-end encryption, and Skype doesn’t have such feature. WhatsApp is free to use, and Facebook bought it in February 2014 for a staggering $19 billion.

All the features mentioned above might make WhatsApp the best alternative to Skype.

Google Hangouts

Another suitable alternative is the Hangouts service offered by Google. The giant company from Mountain View is probably the best in the world in software services; therefore, it could not have been possible the unexistence of a video call service created by Google.

But Google Hangouts does way more than mere video calling: group chat, instant messaging, screen sharing, and the video call is in high definition. The app is easy to use and mostly free.
